Curriculum
Curriculum for Preschool Classes
There are many skills and concepts that are important for preschool students to learn and practice. Academic concepts are taught to prepare preschool children for school. Such academic concepts include letter and number recognition, letter sounds, creating patterns, writing letters and numbers, shapes, colors, etc. It is possible for some of our preschoolers to begin reading before they leave preschool.
Fine motor skills are practiced in our preschool classes. Cutting with scissors, holding a pencil correctly, writing, coloring, drawing, painting, and tracing are some of the skills we practice to help preschoolers to develop the strength they need in their hands to write letters correctly and to build eye-hand coordination. We make things, display our artwork, and create keepsakes for our parents!
Our preschoolers learn to socialize, work together on a project, share with others, take turns, develop friendships, and solve conflicts. These are life skills! Preschoolers learn about the Bible, God, and Jesus to teach them Biblical principles. They learn to pray!
We believe children learn differently, and each child is uniquely and wonderfully made by God. Our preschool teachers will present lessons in different formats to meet the learning styles of the auditory, tactile, and visual learners in the classroom. We supplement our pre-kindergarten program with Abeka curriculum.
Curriculum for Kindergarten through 8th Grade
Our goal is to get to know your student's strengths and weaknesses academically, so we can tailor their instruction to meet their needs. If a student excels in math or language arts, we will consider moving the student to a higer grade level for that subject. If a student needs remediation in a math or language arts, we will consider moving the student to a lower grade level for that subject. Our goal is to provide instruction at a level each student can understand and move forward successfully.
Project-based learning is integrated throughout our curriculum, and we provide project-based instruction classes weekly as part of our enrichment program. Project-based learning gives students opportunities to build skills in collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and the use of technology, which will serve them well in the workplace and life. While some projects border on busy work for some teachers and schools, our student projects involve meaningful learning that engages students’ minds.
Bible/Chapel – We meet every morning before we start our day as a student body to sing a praise/worship song, read from the Bible, have a brief Bible lesson, and pray. We pray for all kinds of things – grandparents, boo boos, allergies, for our families, for pets, and for each other. The list is endless, and our students know we can go to God at any time to pray for anything. We have seen the power of prayer and faith in our school and student body! We have some awesome prayer warriors!! We end chapel with the pledge of allegiance.
Math – We use Saxon Math to teach our students 1st grade through high school. Saxon Math teaches a concept, offers a brief practice of the new concept taught, and then offers a mixed practice which reviews problems and concepts previously taught. We call this the “spiral effect,” and we love it! Gone are the days of learning a concept, being tested on it and not seeing it until it is covered again the next year in math.
We also incorporate a variety of manipulatives and hands-on activities to teach concepts and review them. In Kindergarten, we use Abeka for math. We love the scope and sequence of this curriculum for our Kindergartners.
Reading and Writing – Our reading and writing curriculum is phonics-based for Kindergarten and first grade. We use the Abeka curriculum to teach our students to read. Sight words and other whole language activities are integrated into instruction. As students become fluent readers and have a longer attention span, usually at the start of the second grade, students will begin Reading Workshop and Writing Workshop. Through the Reading Workshop and Writing Workshop, students learn a variety of literary concepts to strengthen and develop a love for reading and writing. Elements of writers’ craft are taught along with genre and grammar.
Science – We use Apologia for our science curriculum. This curriculum is Biblically-based and provides a hands-on demonstration or experiment with most lessons. It is comprehensive, hands-on, and we love it!!
History – We use BiblioPlan curriculum written by Julia and Rob Nalle. This classical curriculum is broken into four years and gives our students a more comprehensive knowledge of what was happening around the world during each time period. Our students learn geography and are very familiar with locations on a map using this curriculum.
Curriculum for High School Classes 9th – 12th
We offer semester- and year-long classes. Students in the 8th grade who have consistently exhibited good test scores and by teacher recommendation may be given the opportunity to take all 9th grade classes or a class or two at the 9th grade level. Some high school students also have the opportunity to enroll in dual enrollment classes to earn high school and college credits simultaneously.
